Turn to the right as you leave the main pier. You will pass picturesque houses and fishermen´s sheds and arrive at a crossroads. The road to the right goes to Enskär and to the hotel. Take the road to the left and follow it to the last house on the left, the ´Adolf Öhmans´ house. During the First World War, this house - like many other buildings in Utö - was used as barracks.
On the right is Västra Udden, which is a military area. There are still casemates made of stones and concrete and used for four canons (152mm) at the time when Finland was under Russian rule. (Finland became independent in 1917. From 1809 until 1917, it was an autonomous part of the Russian empire.) The cobblestone road built by the Russians is well preserved here.
