Utö is a fairly small island: about 80 hectares. However, the neighbourhood is dense. Please respect the privacy of the residents and stroll only along the roads. Yards, piers and boathouses are private.
Only the main pier ("Stora bron") in the village centre is public. Here one can spot Finnpilot's bright orange vessels docked. Guests can berth their boats either to the main pier or the Utö Havshotel pier.
At the main pier, one can find also a large number of milk carts and wheelbarrows. These are private and may not be borrowed without the owner’s permission.
Cars and other vehicles may be brought to Utö only when necessary due to work or another compelling reason. Please contact Utö Road Association for the permission (contact person Martin Öhman, phone +358400353192).
The Finnish Defence Forces operate on three areas on Utö. Please do not enter the areas: these are marked with fences and signs. In the harbors one can find maps showing the military areas. The waste management field ("Mörttilä") in Kesnäs is also closed to the public.
Two areas on Utö are designated as bird sanctuaries during the bird nesting season (April 1–July 31). One area is in Kesnäs (the southern tip of the island) and the other in Östervik (the eastern shore of the island). Both are marked with signs. Please do not stroll through either during the season.
To reach the cliffs at the southern tip of Utö in the summertime, please follow the road that starts at the helicopter field. Do not stroll along the shores.
